55 pc polling recorded in Orissa

An estimated 55 per cent of 13 million electorate today cast their votes for 11 Lok Sabha seats in Orissa in the last leg of polling, which was marked by stray incidents of ballot paper-snatching.

The fate of sixty candidates would be decided in this phase.

State Chief Electoral Officer A S Sharang said the percentage was encouraging despite heavy rains in coastal Orissa for a few hours in the morning,

A large number of voters in the Naxalite-dominated areas of Mohana under the Berhampur parliamentary constituency and the proposed site for the Tisco steel plant area at Chamakhandi under Chhatrapur assembly segment of the same constituency boycotted the polls.

Boycott of poll was also reported from certain areas in almost all the eleven parliamentary constituencies in the state.

Ballot paper snatching was reported in one booth under the Govindpur assembly segment of the Jagatsinghpur parliamentary constituency and two booths under the Bangiriposi assembly segment of the Mayurbhanj (st) parliamentary constituency.

However, no one was arrested in connection with the incident.

Repolling in these booths, if necessary, would be taken up on October 5, Sharang said.
