Again, the Congress won this seat till 1971, since which time the CPI-M has been at it. Abedin Zainal won this seat for the CPI-M from 1980 till 1991. In 1996, after a gap of 25 years, the Congress won back the seat, Mohammed Idris Ali defeating Zainal by 13,000 votes.
