Ram Sagar defeated the Congress in the 1977 election on the BLD's behalf; in 1980 this seat elected R S Shastri of the Jan Parishad. The next time Ram Sagar won from here was in 1989, and this time it was as a BJP candidate. Shastri won the 1991 election for the JD, and the Congress took him in for the 1996 poll, which he finished in the fourth place, securing 3 % of the votes. Vidhyasagar won the seat for the BJP, defeating Raj Bahadur of the SP by 24,000 votes.
