This is the constituency that returned the legendary Kamaraj Nadar of the Congress to the Lok Sabha in 1971, succeeding him was Kumari Ananthan. After that it was the turn of N Dennis of the Congress to keep it within the fold. Dennis fought the 1996 election on the TMC ticket, and made it the first time that the constituency went out of the Congress's hands. Interestingly, the runner-up was the BJP's P Radhakrishnan, who lost by just 28,000 votes.
