In 1952 this constituency returned an Independent, but later stuck on to the Congress, deviating a couple of times to the BLD/JD. In the last three elections, it has returned the BJP's Gumanmal Lodha -- former chief justice of the Assam high court -- despite his vote count falling from a high of 63.6 % in 1989 to 38.92 % in 1996.
