Before 1989 the Congress had lost this seat just once, to the BLD candidate in 1977. In 1989 and 1991 the Janata Dal managed to wrest this constituency from the Congress, which defeated the JD's Ratha Das in 1996. Muralidhar Jena won by 65,000 votes.
