In 1991 Ramakrishna Hegde, contesting on a JD ticket, met his nemesis at the hands of the Congress candidate. The credit for beating the Congress for the first time from this constituency hence went to the JD candidate in 1996, Meti Hullappa Yamanappa. The BJP's share in this election was 23.39 % of the vote.
