September 3-5 will be dry days in Delhi

Three days - from September 3 to 5 -- will be declared as dry days in New Delhi in view of the Lok Sabha poll on September 5. The decision was taken today at a meeting Lieutenant Governor Vijai Kapoor had with the chief secretary, the chief electoral officer, police commissioner and other senior officials to review the arrangements for the smooth conduct of the polls, a Raj Niwas release said.

Kapoor directed the police commissioner to seal Delhi's border with neighbouring states at least two-three days before polling day to prevent entry of elements who might disrupt the voting process. The meeting decided to immediately launch a joint action by police and the excise department to check smuggling of liquor into Delhi.

Kapoor asked the deputy commissioners, concurrently holding the post of Returning Officers, to ensure that polling personnel not only acted impartially but were also seen to be so. The chief electoral officer said 60,000 personnel would man 8,667 polling stations.

Kits containing material to be used by the ROs had been dispatched. Twelve centres have been identified for counting of votes. Besides deployment of Delhi police and central para-military forces, 8,000 home guards would be asked to provide security with the permission of the Election Commission. Extra forces would be provided in sensitive polling stations.
