Bihar to deploy boats during poll

The Bihar government will have to deploy boats, motor boats, traditional modes of transport and horses for conducting election in the flood-hit areas.

Many parts of the state are submerged in flood waters. A majority of the districts are slated to go to the polls in the last phase of the Lok Sabha election on October 3.

Reports from the affected districts said there would be over 27,000 polling booths in the flood-hit areas of the state. The situation is likely to remain so in some parts of these districts even after October.

Local election office sources said the decision to hold the election on October 3 in north Bihar was taken keeping such possibilities in mind.

However, weather office sources said the monsoon becomes quite active in September and first half of October in Bihar.

Political parties will have a trying time campaigning in the Flood-affected region as it would be near-impossible to negotiate vehicles on the damaged and submerged roads.

Political leaders said they were planning to campaign using big boats. They will also use tractors, bullock carts and other traditional modes of transport to reach out to the voters.
