Sushma targets Sonia's origin

E-Mail this report to a friend

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party politician Sushma Swaraj, pitted against Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the Bellary Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka, today promised to converse with the local people in Kannada before the end of the five-phase general election.

Swaraj, who enthralled a large gathering by speaking a few sentences in chaste Kannada, said she would learn to converse with the people in their language before the election ends.

The former Delhi chief minister was cheered lustily when she said, in Kannada, that it was her mission to defeat Gandhi.

"The voters should reject Mrs Gandhi. How can we give away our hard-earned freedom to a foreign lady? We have to protect the independence of the country."
