Mahanta's wife Jayashree elected unopposed to RS

Dr Jayashree Goswami Mahanta, wife of Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Assam as she was the only candidate to file her nomination.

Her papers were found to be in order on scrutiny today, according to returning officer Debakar Talukder.

The Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant following the death of Paragdhar Chaliha.

Jayashree Mahanta will be officially declared elected on August 23, the last date for withdrawals, Talukder said.
