Chat

An adults only chat site. A word of caution to the morality keepers: keep out!

An incredible chat program from Israel that ranks as one of the Web's coolest freeware programs. ICQ's features could fill a book: it allows you to transfer files, travel in groups to different Web pages, play sound effects and much more. The program is very easy to use and has a very attractive and useful interface that allows you to keep track of your friends online and even have several conversations at a time.

This is one of the all-around coolest freebies on the Web. It's a browser that lets you access AlphaWorld, a unique, 3D virtual community populated by real people. The Active Worlds universe boasts hundreds of thousands of users and thousands of kilometres of virtual territory. You can explore over 100 worlds in real-time, 3D, high-colour graphics. You can even "own" land and build anything you'd like on your property, from a simple house to an elaborate palace (a process that is quite easy).

Looking for the perfect chat just right for you? Chances are you'll find a link to it here, at this subject index to live chat rooms on the Net.

Who's talking to whom, where and when. A complete listing of live chats on the Net.

This 'adults only' chat site is extremely popular for its categorisation of rooms: love, work, money... take your pick, depending on your mood! Though you have a choice to the type of chat you want to have -- java, light-java or html -- the light-java scores because of its low download time and ease of use. The traffic gets really heavy sometimes, slowing download time but nevertheless a great place to hang out and make friends.

The Education Web page is a cool place to hang out with students world-wide. It has two chat rooms, both java-enabled. Also gives software job listings, links and lots of articles.

A java-based chat site and every chatter's dream! You can express yourself with sounds, space and movement, as well as text. Choose any graphical 'avatar' or face, and roam around or talk in the hundreds of virtual graphical environments available. Registration is free (with ordinary avatars), but you need to download the software client before you get started. Members can get almost any kind of funky avatars. And it's not just talk: you can shop, attend live events featuring celebrities, experts and pundits, or even create your own Palace room.

One of the oldest chat sites, it has more than 200 rooms categorised by age, interest groups, location and sex. It also offers private rooms, free homepages and an e-mail service. The most popular rooms, 20 Somethings and 30 Somethings, are almost always full.

Don't have fancy hardware? Bamboozled by the tech-speak? Still want to video-conference? This is as good a place to start as any. Download the free software; follow the tips; check out the FAQ, and you are ready to CU-SeeMe!

The best chat site for women (and by women!). The menu is very exciting: a Amazon City Cafe, a hot online conferencing system; the popular Amazon City Chat Network, open 24 hours; Amazon City Radio, the first and only full online radio station for women on the Web; Amazon City Mall; Planet Amazon, a Web guide to the best web sites for women; and Spiderwoman, which is about women Web designers. Men, don't worry, the site allows you in but, like the host warns, you can get thrown out for 'treating the site like a pick-up joint!'

This site offers a roundup of 11 free Java chat networks. You may either chat here, or, if you have a Web site of your own, you may place one of these chat networks on your page.

Chatropolis, with more than 100 rooms, is truly a chat kingdom in itself. Make friends with thousands of strangers, and discuss everything from work to spirituality to sex. Despite its size and the traffic, you can enjoy a smooth session anytime. In fact, don't be surprised if you find yourself alone in some of the rooms. The postings are quite fast.

This site is java-based, and has the usual options of private messaging, private rooms, auto-refresh and speed. Alas, the rooms get too crowded too fast. Just try keeping track of a message for you!

PowWow is one of the earliest and a full-featured Internet community and communications software. Log on to a world different from the usual text-based or java-based chats. With its free downloadable software, PowWow allows you to chat via text or voice; send files; view personal home pages and JPEG images; build bulletin boards; send instant messages; make buddy lists, play domino and dozens of other games; and cruise the Web with on-line friends. It is specially designed for setting up virtual communities, in which you can control the actions of your visitors.

One of the biggest and coolest places to chat on the Net. Newcomers would need a lot of patience before they really find someone to chat with for longer periods.

You can interact with stars or their television shows in special events, or talk about music, films or any topic under the sun. The site has yet to catch on, so you can expect a fairly easygoing chat session.

An amazing menu: adult rooms, rooms for the spiritually inclined, social gathering rooms, philosophical discussions… more than 100 rooms! What more can any chatter ask for! The traffic isn't much, though it sometimes becomes difficult to follow the messages posted for you.

This is a nice IRC-style, Java-based chat service, which you can even add to your own web site. The free version offers personalised chat rooms that give you administrative control over them. What sets apart CrZy from other chat services is the amazingly fast download time and unlimited number of users in a room.

TalkCity is java-based, though you can also connect via IRC. It has plenty of chat rooms and live events taking place. Once the java applets download, the speed isn't a problem. The crowd is very friendly. Besides the works like private rooms and private messaging, it also offers free homepages. Beware of indecent behaviour though, for most rooms have moderators.

With more than 50 rooms, CoolChat, like the homepage says, is the place where cool people chat! It's one of the biggest chat sites and 100 per cent fun, as you will find from the names of the rooms itself: Married but Still Flirting, Smooch and Chat, Lover's Lane, Girl Talk.... Despite its size, the traffic is surprisingly easy, and so is the posting time for messages. You can also submit your profile to the site, which is fed into a database of 'like-minded' people.

You couldn't wish for a 'cooler' chat site! Register yourself in any of the forums, and have a whale of a time chatting in the under 20 and under 30 chat rooms. The design is very different from other chat sites -- 'spacious' for both sending and receiving messages (unlike the cramped style of light-java chats), and though no forum takes in more than 16 people, you can find always find a place. There are scores of snazzy images (gifs) to enliven your chat: send someone a bouquet of roses, or call the troublemaker a 'skunk' and shoo him out! The message posting time is very fast too. All in all, a not-so-famous-but-still-a-favourite site.

NetCentral is a favourite for its number of chat rooms but, alas, the traffic sometimes becomes too much to take. Otherwise the one-time registration ensures a good time in its vast domain.

One of the hidden wonders of the Web! This is a cool java chat with dozens of rooms and perhaps the cleanest interfaces among chat sites. The design is snazzier and more chat friendly -- no cramped spaces to receive or post messages. Check out its version of sending private messages: double-click on the name of the person, and you can ask for the profile, whisper, or send a kiss. The traffic isn't much, and neither is the download time, so register at once!

A cool web-based hangout for teenagers and adults alike. Lots of rooms, categorised into general (like Net Cafe), age-based (20- and 30-somethings) and adults only. The traffic isn't much, and though the message time is a bit annoying, the site's clean interface and variety of rooms more than make up. Adults beware, for though there are five rooms reserved for them, each is monitored and any kind of harassment or posting pornographic links will only get you out.
