Internet/Instant Messengers

It notifies you whenever any of your friends come online, enabling you to communicate instantly with them. You can also set controls on the people you want to communicate with. Unlike other instant messengers, this one doesn't have a searchable directory or a user profile, minimising the possibility of receiving unwanted messages.

See when your friends are online, and send them private, instant messages. You can maintain a buddy list -- a list of friends you would like to keep in touch with regularly in cyberspace.

You need to page your friend before initiating a chat, a two-step process that is one step too many. Pages appear in separate incoming and outgoing windows, making even one-on-one conversations difficult to follow. Initiate a Quick Chat once you have made contact. Here, all conversation takes place in one window. You can build your own list of emotions, handy for letting others gauge your online mood.

Useful for sending a few short notes but not for prolonged conversation. Each message is displayed in a separate box, quickly filling up your screen. You need to know each colleague's IP address, which makes it a difficult program to set up. The rewards: send messages to multiple users simultaneously. The Seeker utility will help you locate colleagues and browse a range of IP addresses for other NetPopUp users.

Lets you chat, send instant messages, transfer files, or run your own private business meeting with a whole group. Plus, it shows which of your friends are online, and alerts you when new friends come online.

Enables users to exchange dialogue in 'real time'. Enter the name and email addresses of friends and family into Excite PAL and chat with them. It offers a visible/invisible option like ICQ, and gives total control regarding who you can see and who you cannot. You can even hold a private conference. It also allows multiple users to talk simultaneously on the same window.

The Buddy List helps you keep in touch with online pals. You can create a profile of your own and locate your AOL friends by name and address. Also offers personalised news.

This popular utility occupies a small portion of your screen and provides you with up-to-the-minute information about your friend's presence, including if they're online, if they don't want to be bothered, and any short message they wish to publish with their name. You can also send instant messages, chat, and transfer files with those on your list.

You get a personal Web page, a Flymail box, and access to chat rooms and bulletin boards. It offers some unique personalisation features. Though it keeps track of friends online, it does a better job of linking like-minded strangers. Personal Web pages let members tell a little about themselves, and a user directory is searchable by interests.
