Education/India - Top Sites

The alumni page of arguably India's best college has links to a student exchange programme with Brown University, history, news (where you will find an interesting article on how the hostel is no longer a male bastion) and a picture gallery.

Go to the site for information on areas such as Indian economy monitor, IMF databases, 1991 population census database, village amenities database, rural technology database, university and college directory of India, etc.

Once a premier institute of learning, the Aligarh Muslim University is today a shadow of its historical self. Its web site is meant only for alumni. Scholarships, support and information is what is offered to its past students and their families. A brief history and a virtual tour of the campus are also thrown in.

What started off in 1817 in a rented house by the name of Hindu College today ranks among the top ten Indian colleges. Its web site lists each of the 18 departments, but nothing is mentioned about admission requirements and procedures.

The idea is to offer quality education to a "much larger body of the population that remains outside the university system." Which it plans to do through its various schools of computer and information sciences, humanities, social sciences, education, sciences, engineering and technology, continuing education, management studies, and health sciences. On offer are bachelors and masters degrees, graduate and postgraduate diplomas.

Its schools of international studies and language, literature and culture studies rank among the best in India. Also has schools of social sciences, life sciences, environmental studies, computer and system sciences, physical sciences, biotechnology. Offers BA (Hons), MA, MPhil and PhD.

Rated among the top ten Indian colleges by an India Today opinion poll, Loyola College, Madras, lives up to the billing for the sheer variety of courses it offers. While the basic arts, science and commerce undergraduate and postgraduate courses figure prominently on its academic bill of fare, a little searching will take you to some unique programmes. Like Ethics and Religious Studies (tackling subjects like love, sex and social deviation), some specialised language courses (three-year course in Tamil, French for computers, business science, tourism, communicative English and linguistics), a unique post-graduate course in applied history, and a pioneering one in women's writing.

The New-Delhi based St George's College web site takes you through its history, introduces you to its principals and alumni, salutes its war heroes and loyal soldiers, lists out the holidays, but leaves you without any info on what it teaches you.

One of Lucknow's most popular colleges, St Francis' has little academic content on its web site. But you can browse through its introduction, history, merit list, take its pledge, listen to its anthem or post a message.

A central university financed by the University Grants Commission, it offers postgraduate courses through its schools of mathematics and computer sciences, physics, chemistry, life sciences, humanities, social sciences and fine arts. The web site provides details about the courses and admission. Its city campus, The Golden Threshold, is a historical attraction since it was once the residence of Sarojini Naidu.

It may take you quite some time to enter the web site of St. Xavier's College (yes, it is one of the most exasperatingly visual-heavy site you can come across!), but once inside, you can taste the best of student life in India: the campus, the college festival, the departments and residential houses etc. Nothing about academics, though.

A partial list of Josephites, addresses of teachers, and a brief introduction is all you will get at Calcutta's St Joseph's College web site. One of India's better colleges, St Joseph's is the first Christian Brother institution in the country.
