Education/Chat

As the name blatantly suggests, Parentsplace handles everything parents would love, which obviously includes education. Visitors can browse through details on issues that bother parents all over the globe, especially the relevance of the three Rs in today's schools. The web chat room is where visitors can discuss everything from moms without moms to coping with alcoholism, non-custodial parents and more. Other links to expert advice on a number of issues, fertility, health, family, and even a regional health file that includes India, are other highlights of the site.

No fuss, no links. Just chatting, plain and simple. The College Live Lighthouse Chat is for college students from around the world who want to discuss everything from books and movies to culture, politics and, obviously, college. There's also a link to the 24-hour Kill Devil Hill Literary Cafe and an interesting, but somewhat vague link called the Jolly Roger which supposedly lists lots of interesting deals. For the rest, just fill in a simple form and start chatting.

An International Chat room is only one of the links offered here. There's a lot more on education, colleges, cyber pals, a unique 'avatar chat' where you get a chance to adopt a fictional persona, and also a message board. Among the many chat rooms here are ones dealing with books, business, computers, motors, music, politics, religion, sports, teen chats and more.

The Student Centre Chat is, as its opening page tells you, a chat room for college students, high school students and teens, with weekly Java chats on various themes. Well designed and quick to load, there are quite a few useful links that definitely promise something for students around the world. Helpful information, entertainment and fun mingle and what visitors get is a place to just hang around with nothing heavy to discuss. The interesting thing is that the site has hits from thousands of students all over the world, 24 hours a day. This makes it easy to gain specific information on any college, school or university across the globe. Announcement lists on music, sports, games, computers and jobs are also on hand; if the user-friendly interface is not enticing enough.

Numbers can be fun. Then again, they can make life miserable. For those who love, hate or just can't ignore mathematics, Algebra Online is a free private tutoring service that offers a message board and live chat. Visitors can find a lot of questions and discussions relating to all levels of mathematics. The site is simple and quick to load, with links to personal help, a book centre in association with Amazon.com (featuring books on algebra, obviously, at discounted rates), a mailing list, interactive tests and even a competent search facility. If that's not interesting, questions and answers to all those knotty problems can be sorted out in the chat rooms.

College-oriented topics are what you get at the College Student Chat, round the clock. A neat and well-maintained site, unlike a few other haphazard chat sites, lots of links list topics like college, culture, sports, travel and jobs. The goal is, ultimately, to provide students with an interactive and interesting site, useful information and just plain entertainment. To help this endeavour are connections to Student Net Publishing, corporate information and exciting news releases, plus part-time and full-time openings in Cambridge, Massachusetts where the site is based.

Classroom Connect's Virtual Auditorium is a real time chat for educators, students, and parents. The home page lists lots of interesting links to everything from current events to environmental issues, along with a search facility. For visitors expecting just a chat room, the site is a surprise with its education-related resources, products, information and support -- all aimed at enhancing the classroom learning experience. Links include GRADES, a well-researched selection of quality education-related Internet sites categorised into subject area and grade level-specific sections. The Resource Station offers further information, internet-enhanced lesson plans and interesting articles from the site's newsletter. Students can also find educational software on the Internet, information from world-class presenters, over 60 sessions as well as hands-on labs and pre-conference workshops -- much more than what a simple chat site has to offer.

Interested in meeting people from across the globe? West End Network (W. E. N.) is a multilingual chat room designed to facilitate language exchange. With its chat and information rooms, bulletin boards, art gallery and guest book, this simple site is quite pleasing. The Information Room is more like a classified counter, with messages, information, buy and sell data, accommodations and more.

Ashamed about your ungrammatical and improper English? Chat at CRIBE, the Chat Room In Broken English and meet a lot more people like you from across the globe. CRIBE offers two cyber chat rooms. While CRIBE 1 is for non-native speakers, CRIBE 2 is a mirror and used only if the number of hits on the original slow down the server. Even the links on this page are in broken English, which can get a bit irritating if your English happens to be better than what appears on the screen. Sadly, the only downside is that the content here can get a bit vulgar at times, as the hosts have no way of keeping track of the material. Still, this doesn't stop the site being an interesting option for foreign students.

A communication web site dealing exclusively with education, EduChat is where students and education professionals from around the world come to access free conferencing systems with live and Internet relay chats. Visitors can either obtain free web email accounts or plunge right into other links to online resources and education, a permanent online education fair or a search engine for education on the net. What you get at the chat site is a wide range of discussion groups where you swap ideas, seek advice from professionals or just while away a few hours. The forums include the International Student forum, ELT Teacher's Forum for teachers of English as a second language, Online English Grammar Forum for answers to language problems and a World of Language Forum. All you have to do is choose a forum, get a login name and you can find practical answers to all sorts of questions.

This one's for the teachers. Teachers.Net is, obviously, a web site catering to those magnificent people and their black boards. There's a ChatBoard where teachers from around the world list their problems, solutions, tips and advice on all aspects of education. As for the chats, visitors can read up transcripts on earlier topics discussed, like teacher collaborations, real friendships, teaching middle school and even golf. An interesting thing to note is that while Teachers.Net is used predominantly by teachers, the site is also visited regularly by students and others, not because they want to keep an eye on the teachers for a change, but because a lot of links provide useful data on colleges, technological innovations and new developments in classrooms across the globe.

If you are an exchange student, or if you have a friend or family member who is, this is the place to be. The International Exchange Student Chat hosts multi-language chat rooms open to those of the aforementioned ilk, along with links to user profiles, photos and quite a few other features. A simple and quick site, the chat menu lists the various rooms and five language options. The site claims that exchange student organisations from around the world have endorsed it, printing its address on their brochures. Other links include a forwarding address section, missing exchange student / host family page and user comments page. There are also 'Cool Links' that list information on exchange student organisations, countries, cultural fun, international tools, free communications and Internet gifts. Give this site a shot. Most visitors should find something or someone interesting.

Distance Education Chat and Resources hosts general chats every week, while live sessions are on at all hours. But that's not all there is to this simple site. Course development, profitability, trends and information on a lot more topics are also linked to the homepage. For those interested in specific chats, filling in a small registration form makes sure the schedule reaches them on time. Finally, a link to the Educational Event Calendar lists major educational conferences, seminars and events, both virtual and live. Who says talking doesn't get you anything?

This webchat programme, hosted by The Record, lets visitors post images and hypertext links with all messages. Its `education chat' is usually frequented by concerned parents and those interested in discussing various aspects of education. Those who log in can read a whole lot of views, opinions and ideas about particular schools or education in general. There are also links to education reports on the latest happenings in teaching. Finally, though Indians might not find much of the chat relevant to their interests.

Progressive Education Chat is what it's called, an arena for the real-time discussion of issues pertaining to education, teaching, and schools and more. Less a chat site than a good resource for teachers, students and individuals interested in progressive education, the home page lists interesting essays on everything from social change to alternative ways of thinking, teaching and learning. There's also an interactive discussion board connecting educators and their ideas, enabling anyone to put up an education-related idea and look at the responses. All in all, a fairly neat site with useful links and even a site of the week for those genuinely interested in academics on the WWW.
