Here’s the good news. The University of Adelaide will award nearly 60 scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate international students in 2000. It has a full-fledged International Programs Office which promises to will help students in admission, enrolment and orientation. The University offers a host of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including agriculture and natural resource, architecture, the performing arts, dentistry, law and medicine. Browsing through the site is slow, but it provides relevant information about admissions, fees, and courses offered.

It was named the Australian University of 1997. If for nothing else, Charles Sturt University deserves that title for the sheer variety and number of courses it offers. From wine-making to nuclear medicine to management studies you will find a course to suit your aspirations from among the 60 undergraduate and 20 post graduate courses in arts and commerce. The section for international students is quite comprehensive, and lists relevant details like admission requirements, fee structure, scholarships offered and distance learning programmes. The university conducts an orientation programme and a course on study skills for university success for foreign students.

"Griffith does not follow, it leads. It does not copy, it initiates." No modesty here. Griffith University boasts the presence of more than 2,500 international students from over 50 nations. Step-by-step instructions are the best part of its web site. A wide selection of courses for international students is offered, with detailed info about each. Add that to information regarding fees, international eligibility requirements and comprehensive details about scholarships for foreign students; and what you have is a welcome, user-friendly nook in cyberspace. Among the many aspects enumerated upon are how to enrol and what the entry requirements and application procedures are; while an application form can also be downloaded. Lastly, the best thing for foreign students is a complete list of scholarships available and the university International Centre that provides services from pre-departure information to on-going social, personal and academic support. Things just do not get easier than this on the WWW.

From Greek to Geophysics, Photonics to Palaeontology, and a world of subjects in between you name it and you are likely to find a study area of your interest at Macquaire. The information for students on its web site is equally diverse. From airport reception and accommodation to excursions, emergency funds, student advice, work visas and the International Students Club all are given due coverage. While subjects of study appear to be in plenty at the site, the search for financial aid and scholarships leads to nothing. You win some, you lose some.

University of Newcastle has over 18,000 students, 150 undergraduate and postgraduate courses, 11 Faculties and two main campuses. Its three important areas are the Faculty of Music and Conservatorium, Legal Centre and Graduate School of Business. For prospective students, finding relevant and specific information should not be difficult, considering the presence of links to everything from courses and study options to services and facilities offered for international students. Visitors can choose from a wide variety of degrees ranging from architecture and the arts to computing, business, law and medicine. Step by step information on visas, enrolment, payments and admissions, with a competent search facility to cover any areas that haven't been mentioned. Another special feature of the site is its complete list of scholarships for masters and doctorate students from overseas. The University's International Office provides a range of welfare and support services along with advice on matters such as travel, visas and health insurance.

The University of South Australia is one of the largest Australian university, spread over six campuses with over 25,000 students in them. It also has the largest intake of foreign students in the state and offers quite a few scholarships. Aboriginal and islander studies, business and management, art, architecture and design, engineering and environment, information technology are some of the more popular courses on offer. The section for international students gives a complete low-down on admission requirements, fees, financial aid, etc.

Two degrees in the time you would normally do just one. At the University of Queensland, you could simultaneously study for two degree courses. Of course, if you are not up to studying that hard, you can do the regular bachelor or diploma courses in a variety of subjects. International students can head straight for the section called Preparing to Study, for a bunch of extremely useful links: what to expect, cost of living, when to arrive, the first few days, people who can help... The university demands a high standard of English. But that need not be a bother as it conducts many programmes to brush up your language skills before the course begins. Besides English, students will also have to be proficient in typing, since work has to be submitted typewritten. The site has a piece of advice: scholarships are few, and competition fierce, so apply early.

With 30,000 students in over 10 campuses, the University of Sydney is perhaps Australia's largest. From music to nursing, fine arts to health sciences, the university offers an entire spectrum of undergraduate, post-graduate and PhD courses. But there's very little for the international student either at the site or the university. Foreign students can study only on a short-tem basis for a maximum of one-year. And that can set you back by $ 6148 Australian dollars, because there's absolutely no mention of financial aid.
