Careers/Counselling - Top Sites

This section at the Wall Street Journal is devoted to people who are interested in establishing long-term careers for themselves. Besides a whole lot of expert information, it also offers e-mail alerts on new employers and a careers Q & A where editor-in-chief Tony Lee answers your questions about job hunting and career management.

ACINet contains occupational information that will assist you in your employment search and increase your overall understanding of the job market. It has sections on employment outlook, earnings, training, state-wise demographic information and a host of other useful stuff.

It's a site worth going through thoroughly. Not only does it have specific career-related information, it also has sections devoted to employment projections, tomorrow's jobs, sources of career information, finding a job, evaluating offers and a separate spin-off to occupations that they have not yet had time to study in detail.

Like the name says, this site offers tips for maintaining a positive attitude when you're downsized. Example: If you leave the company kicking and screaming, you're likely to ruin any chance of using your employer as a reference.

This is a quick and easy way to ensure you are on track with your career development and job search efforts. As you review each stage of an overall career management plan, you can determine if that stage is appropriate at this point in time.

First, you are asked to answer a whole list of questions regarding your temperament, ability, working conditions, education, interest areas, salary requirement and employment outlook. Then, your answers are used to find careers that match your interests and abilities.

The idea is to design a career that fits you rather than trying to squeeze into something the wrong shape or a few sizes too small. To do that you must turn your attention inward. When you have achieved some internal clarity, then turn your attention to matching your vision to the realities of the outside world. Interested?

Though you fill nine forms in order to get your personality measured and find a career that suits you accordingly, it does make a pretty good beginning. Then, it directs you to other sites that will give you advice related to your ideal career.

You can use the help here to plan your career and pick up interview tips. They also provide estimated starting salaries for graduates and answer zone forms. The most thoughtful sections are the guide for parents, loan centre, your personal organiser and a special list of long term careers found to be the most lucrative.
