Arts and Literature/Theatre

Vast, neat and impressive, Thespians.Com is all of this and more. It lets anyone with an interest in the performing arts become a member for free, and then gives them access to a whole world of theatre resources. There's a discussion board, weekly list of videos and soundtracks, profiles of famous performers, database of productions and events throughout North America, and resources leading to props, costumes, sound, lighting and production services.

The Dramatic Exchange boasts a growing list of over 110 plays online. Supposedly the ideal place for playwrights to publish and distribute their plays, it accepts new submissions from budding playwrights, gives you a FAQ list for any queries, links to theatrical sites, and a comprehensive catalogue of plays.

Simple and very informative, this is one site no lover of the logistics behind Shakespearean drama can ignore. It has a brief online guide to the famous Globe theatre from 1599 to 2000, links to Shakespeare on the Web, and even a useful FAQ list. Reports and photographs add to overall value.

Sections on history, characters, scenarios, staging and Shockwave movies are what you get here -- all devoted to that ancient and influential Italian art form called Commedia dell' Arte. Good photographs, film clips and pages on mask workshops add to the site's appeal.

Images like one of Shakespeare mouthing the word "Cool" may put off the purists but, for others, this site professes to provide an interesting course in acting. It also has book listings, raw facts about a career in acting, a guide to commercial voice-over excellence and other interesting titbits.

Professional, academic or recreational. If it has to do with theatre, you will probably find it here. The archive covers everything from academic and training institutions to journals, mailing lists, newsgroups, companies, events, festivals and resources.

Bright and pleasant, Playbill Online is what we normally call a programme guide. The difference is that it has a chat room, message board, and listing of plays from Broadway and Off-Broadway to performances in the US and UK. Features, interviews, quizzes jobs and the opportunity to buy tickets in America and London.

It could work on its interface, but the Theatre Express site still has its moments. An online book and music store, good cover stories, listings of what's playing where, reviews of current productions, and links to other theatre sites.

One of the few sites focussing on the Indian theatre scene. Covers the English, Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi stage. Includes a monthly play schedule.
