Arts and Literature/Indian Art

Simple, no-nonsense. For those who want the information and nothing else, this site should be more than satisfactory. It has an FAQ list for Indian classical music, pages for Carnatic and Hindustani music, the classical Indian dance forms, images of noted artists and lots more.

Links, links and more links are what you can get by logging in here. From literature and dance to theatre, galleries, music, photography and people -- the search for Indian aesthetics is covered in all diversity.

Like the name suggests, this is where you can get a collection of links to all aspects of art in India, be it music, dance, film, literature or painting. There's an index of galleries of Indian art and artefacts on the web, an arts discussion board and even Bollywood URLs. Indian music and dance, modern and classical, poetry, plays and novels are all part of this simple yet comprehensive site.

Though this takes a while to load, thanks to the many graphics, you don't complain. What you get is a huge collection of antique and contemporary artefacts, sculptures, paintings, prints and books of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Ganesha, Buddha, India, Nepal, China and Europe. The Maharaja Collection is one of the largest online galleries and also boasts paintings by Indian masters like M R Achrekar, Anjolie Ela Menon, Sunil Das and Anand Pardesi.

This is where you can start off on the basics of what Indian art is all about. Its influences, evolution and subjects are all dealt with, as are its forms -- paintings, sculptures, craft and miniature paintings.

While it serves as a tribute to a woman professor of art and literature, this site can be extremely useful for students and amateurs alike. Focusing on the studies of Dr Lavanya, it has a lot of useful information on rock, Buddhist, Indus, Jain, Hindu and Islamic art.

Simple and uncluttered, this journal of contemporary writing and reviews claims to have what it calls a ' volatile mixture of poetry and prose.' What you get are pages covering poetry, fiction, reviews, subscription information and even a section on the Canadian literary scene.

Though it belongs to the India Today Group, the Art Today site is not exceptionally well designed. Still, for those who value content above all else, it does have a lot to offer -- from paintings and drawings to interviews, special art forms and even the opportunity to purchase art reproductions.

Going by the name of The Guild, this comprises consultants and dealers in contemporary Indian art. The site is good for its nice samples representing leading artists like Laxman Shreshtha, Akbar Padamsee, Krishen Khanna, Laxma Goud, Thota Vaikuntham and Arpana Caur, among other famous masters.

Supposedly India's first exclusive online art gallery, this one shows promise. It features prominent artists free of charge in its endeavour to promote Indian art. As for the works featured, they vary from time to time. Interesting lithographs or paintings like a series on 'Digital Art' by Ankur Gupta are only an example.
