Shoulder injury rules out Broad for up to seven weeks

England all rounder Stuart Broad will be out of action for up to seven weeks after tearing a muscle in his right shoulder during the tied fourth One-dayer against India, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Monday.

Broad's injury means he will miss the final One-dayer against India in Cardiff on Friday and has also been ruled out of the five-match ODI series in India next month.

"Stuart has a muscle tear within his shoulder and will require an initial period of rest and rehabilitation," ECB chief medical officer Nick Peirce said.

"Exact timescales will be determined in due course but he is likely to be ruled out of cricket for a number of weeks."

The statement added that Broad, the captain of England's Twenty20 side, "may be fit to join the squad for the Twenty20 fixture scheduled for 29 October in Kolkata".

Broad could not complete his quota of overs in the fourth ODI against India at Lord's on Sunday after he suffered the shoulder injury while bowling his final over.

The pacer was given painkillers and was ready to bat at number 11 if needed during England's chase, which ended with seven balls to still go due to rain.

With Morgan, England's T20 vice-captain, too ruled out due to a shoulder injury there is no obvious replacement for Broad as captain.

Another cause for concern is that Broad could also miss the five-match ODI tour of India next month.

Broad bowled well at Lord's, picking up the wickets of openers Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane in his first two overs.

It has been an injury-hit last 10 months for Broad, who was ruled out of the final three Ashes Tests last winter due to stomach strain, before picking up a rib injury during the World Cup that forced him to return home.
