CLT20 PHOTOS: De Kock hits ton for Lions but Otago win in Super Over

Opener Quinton De Kock's century went in vain as Otago Volts edged past the Highveld Lions in the Super Over, in a thrilling Champions League T20 match, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, on Sunday.

De Kock carried his bat right through the innings to finish on a wonderful innings of 109 from 63 balls but James Neesham's superb all-round showing helped Otago clinch a narrow victory, which was eventually decided on the number of boundaries hit after both teams posted the same score in the Super Over.

James McMillan provided the first breakthrough for Otago Volts with the wicket of opener Rassie van der Dussen.

Van der Dussen struggled for 17 from 24 balls before he was trapped leg before wicket, in the eighth over.

Lions struggle in the middle overs

Lions continued to struggle in the middle overs as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Left-arm spinner Nick Beard left the Lions reeling at 73 for three with the wickets of Temba Bavuna and Alviro Petersen off successive deliveries, in the 12th over.

De Kock single-handedly changed the script with his attacking batting in the final few overs.

Lions hit as many as 83 runs in the final six overs as with de Kock leading the charge as he smashed his way to a sizzling knock of 109 from 63 balls, hitting 10 fours and five sixes.

Otago struggle after early wickets

Otago Volts struggled at the start as they lost a couple of early wickets and were reduced to 27 for two in the fourth over.

Neil Broom was dismissed by Ethan O'Reilly for six, while Brendon McCullum was caught by Sohail Tanvir off Lonwabo Tsotsobe for five.

Neesham's blast saves Otago

James Neesham rescused Otago with a blazing knock of 52 not out from 25 balls that took the match into a Super Over after both teams finished on the same score.

Needing nine from the final over, Neesham hit the first ball from Tanvir for a six over long-on before the left-arm pacer kept the batsmen guessing with clever change of pace.

Neil Wagner missed the last ball with two runs needed for victory but a fumble from wicketkeeper Derek de Boorder helped Otago steal a bye and tie the match.

Otago batted first in the Super Over and made 13 runs in the six deliveries with Neesham and McCullum hitting a six each.

In reply, de Kock continued his good run as he hit a four and a six from the first two balls before Neesham struck with the wicket of Jean Symes from the fourth ball. Dwayne Pretorius was run out off the last ball as the two teams again finished on the same score, in the Super Over, but Otago were declared the winners on the basis of the number of boundaries hit in the initial 20 overs.
