McCullum makes history, becomes first to reach 2,000 runs

Brendon McCullum of New Zealand

Brendon McCullum is rewriting the record books in 2014.

In February, he became the first New Zealand batsman to score a triple hundred – with his 302 against India at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

The same innings also helped the 32-year-old become the first captain in Test history to score a triple and a double hundred in consecutive matches – having scored 224 in the opening Test at Auckland.

His series aggregate against India (535 runs in two Tests) was also the record for most runs scored by a captain in a two Test series.

Now the New Zealand captain has become the first batsman to cross 2,000-run mark in Twenty20 Internationals.

McCullum achieved the feat during the ICC World T20 2014 match against the Netherlands at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, when he steered Logan van Beek for a single in the 10th over to reach 21.

McCullum was eventually dismissed for a 45-ball 65, his man-of-the-match effort ensuring New Zealand a comprehensive six-wicket win.

The fifty was McCullum’s 13th in T20 internationals (another record). He is also the only batsman to score two hundreds in the format.

McCullum now has 2,044 runs from 67 T20 matches. Here’re the other top scorers in the game’s shortest format.
