ICC could scrap Champions Trophy

March 05, 2011 14:17 IST

The International Cricket Council could consider doing away with the much-criticised Champions Trophy to maintain the World Cup's status as the "pinnacle" ODI event.

The biennial Champions Trophy has often been derided for being a meaningless event given that there is already an ODI World Cup.

The Cup itself has not been immune to criticism with several experts ridiculing its length and the presence of minnows, which lead to a number of mismatches in the event. The ICC is already considering reducing the number of teams to 10 for the next edition in 2015.

"What we're trying to work towards is a pinnacle event in each format ... so if we're looking to our next cycle we might think definitely about (losing) the Champions Trophy," ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat told reporters here.

The Champions Trophy has been played since 1998.
