Karuna Jain stars in India's win over England

Wicketkeeper Karuna Jain produced an all-round performance to guide India to a thrilling 18-run victory over England in the opening tie of the quadrangular limited-overs women's cricket tournament in Chennai on Wednesday.

Karuna hit a valuable 77 and her 121-run opening stand with Jaya Sharma (61) helped India post a competitive 231 for six before Amita Sharma (2-36) and Jhulan Goswami (2-25) combined to restrict England to 213 in 48 overs.

Karuna then added 58 vital runs with captain Mithali Raj (35) before being stumped by Sarah Taylor.

In the final ten overs of the innings, India added 50 runs.

Karuna then claimed two victims behind the stumps to complete an all-round performance.

In the other match of the day, New Zealand shocked Australia for a six-wicket win with two overs to spare.

Vice-captain Rebecca Rhodes smashed an unbeaten 104 off 87 balls to help New Zealand overhaul Australia's total of 260 for nine comfortably.

The winning teams earned four points each.

The Australian innings evolved around an elegant 65 by Lisa Sthalekar and her 82-run partnership with Shelly Nitschke (33).

But Rebecca's hurricane knock, which contained 18 fours and a six, swung the match in the Whiteferns' way.

Sarah Tsukigawa's 42 not out was the other valuable innings for New Zealand.

Sarah added 108 runs off 99 balls for the unbroken fifth wicket with Rebecca, who was declared woman of the match.
