The West Indies Cricket Board announced earlier on Wednesday that Taylor, 19, was returning home after failing to recover from a back strain sustained during the first Test against Zimbabwe in Harare last month.
West Indies chairman of selectors Viv Richards said in a statement issued in Antigua: "Judging from the word coming out of South Africa, and having regard for South Africa's vulnerability to wrist spinners, and having further regard for their (South Africa's)
"So, we're back-tracking from six quicks to a wrist spinner in Dave Mohammed as replacement. This, especially after (Dinanath) Ramnarine's successes against them."
Ramnarine announced recently that he was retiring from cricket.
West Indies, who beat a Nicky Oppenheimer XI by 12 runs in the opening match of their South African tour on Wednesday, will play South Africa in four Tests and five one-day internationals over the next two months.
