Australia easily crushed the West Indies to win the opening cricket Test at the Bourda Ground in Georgetown on Sunday by 9 wickets.

Justin Langer (78) and Ricky Ponting (42) finished the formalities on day four to keep the Australian winning streak going.

On Sunday morning, the Australians took just 41 minutes to wrap up the West Indian second innings for 398. The Windies added just 17 runs and lost their last five wickets in 8.2 overs leaving Australia needing 147 runs.

Paceman Jason Gillespie spearheaded the Australian attack taking 4 for four to finish with 5-39 for his seventh five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

At one point, there was the bizarre sight of four batsmen on the field at the same time with injured batsmen Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ridley Jacobs requiring runners.

Vasbert Drakes was trapped lbw low down on the last ball of Gillespie's opening over of the day to be out on his
overnight score of 14.

Gillespie removed Mervyn Dillon lbw for 0, his 24th duck in Test cricket, and then grabbed the key wicket of first innings centurion Chanderpaul.

Chanderpaul, who was inconvenienced by a knee injury after being struck on the joint in the first innings, tickled a Gillespie delivery just wide of off stump to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist for 31.

Jacobs, who is unlikely to play in the next Test after tearing a groin muscle batting in the first innings, lasted 19 balls in great discomfort and had scored 11 runs before he gave Darren Lehmann a sharp catch at short leg off Stuart MacGill for the leg spinner's third wicket of the innings.

Jermaine Lawson was out soon after, lbw to Gillespie for a duck, to end the West Indies innings
