Windies looking to win tri-series and prove themselves

June 27, 2013 20:41 IST

After a not-too-good outing in the just-concluded ICC Champions Trophy, West Indies coach Ottis Gibson says his team is eager to "prove" its credentials in the ODI tri-series, featuring India and Sri Lanka, starting in Kingston on Friday.

"We were a bit unfortunate with what happened in England. I think we were starting to shape up to do well in that tournament… it's just to kick on from there," said Gibson.

Otis Gibson"It's to put those little mistakes that we made in England, put them away. We felt we had a good opportunity to win that tournament and we want to win this one and prove ourselves right," he was quoted as saying by Jamaica Gleaner.

During the tri-series, which will be played in Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, the three teams will play each other twice and the top two will advance to the final.

The home side arrived in Kingston on Tuesday and had a full training session at Sabina Park on Thursday.

They open their campaign against Sri Lanka.

Gibson, who has been at the helm for more than three years, said it is crucial for the West Indies to use their recent disappointments as motivation to succeed.

The West Indies failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the quadrennial event in England.

"It is good to be back home and it is the first time we are playing a tri-nation tournament in quite a while, so we are looking for positive results and we are looking to win it," said Gibson.
