Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne broke Dennis Lillee's world record for the most wickets in a calendar year to trigger a South African batting collapse on the second day of the first Test on Saturday.

Warne bowled South African opener AB de Villiers for 68 to match the record, then trapped Ashwell Prince lbw for 28 to claim it outright as the tourists lost five wickets for 60 runs to slump to 189 for six at tea at the WACA.

South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher was unbeaten on nine at the end of the session with all rounder Shaun Pollock on one and the Proteas still 69 runs behind Australia's modest first innings total of 258.

Brett Lee also captured two wickets with his express pace, bowling Herschelle Gibbs for 21 and having Jacques Rudolph caught in the slips by Justin Langer, while Nathan Bracken and Glenn McGrath captured one each.

Bracken made the initial breakthrough before lunch when he removed South African captain Graeme Smith for 34, brilliantly caught by Ricky Ponting at second slip, while McGrath sent Justin Kemp packing with Brad Hodge taking the catch at mid-off.

South Africa had resumed at 38-0 and made a flying start to the day, racing to 83-0 inside the first hour, when things suddenly went wrong.

Ponting held a sharp catch with a dive to his right at second slip to get rid off Smith, then Gibbs, who took 23 minutes just to get off the mark, dragged a wide delivery from Lee back on to his stumps in the penultimate over before lunch.

De Villiers survived for almost three hours, hitting 10 boundaries in his 109-ball knock, before Warne snuck one between bat and pad to claim his 85th wicket for the year and equal Lillee's record from 1981.

Rudolph departed for eight when Langer took a low catch at third slip and Kemp followed him back to the pavilion for eight before Steve Bucknor raised his finger to end Prince's innings and give Warne yet another record.
