U-19 WC: India beat England, meet SA in 5th place playoff

January 25, 2010 20:21 IST

Skipper Ashok Menaria shone with the ball while debutant Produturi Reddy starred with the bat as defending champions India thumped England by seven wickets, in Christchurch on Monday, to stay in the hunt for a fifth place finish in the ICC Under-19 World Cup.

After England opted to bat first, leg-spinner Menaria (4 for 35) wrecked the British side which folded for 176 in 49.2 overs.

Jos Buttler top-scored for England with a 125-ball 78.

Chasing the target, India cruised to 179 for three in 36.4 for a facile win with Reddy hammering a solid 94 to run away with the man-of-the-match award.

The Indian colts will take on their South African counterparts on Wednesday in the fifth place playoff match.

Reddy, who featured in a 87-run opening partnership with Mayank Agarwal (28) to give India a solid start, cracked nine fours and two sixes during his 116-ball innings.

India lost two quick wickets in the form of Agarwal and Lokesh Rahul (22) before Reddy was also removed by Nathan Buck (2 for 41).

Mandeep Singh's unbeaten 20-ball 22, however, helped them achieve the target with Menaria (1) for company.
