Stats: Ashwin takes honours in India's big win

India inflicted a whitewash over New Zealand to claim the three-match Test series 3-0 in Indore on Tuesday after winning the final Test by a massive 321 runs on the fourth day.

Here are the statistical highlights from third and final Test between India and New Zealand.

# Ashwin's splendid second innings figures of 7 for 59 are his best in a Test innings, beating the 7 for 66 vs South Africa at Nagpur in November 2015.

# Ashwin's Test figures of 13 for 140 are his best in a Test match, outstripping the 12 for 85 vs New Zealand at Hyderabad in August 2012. His two best match performances are the best ever by a bowler for India vs New Zealand in Tests.

# Ashwin's marvellous tally of six ten-wicket hauls in a Test match is bettered only by Anil Kumble (8).

# Ashwin's tally of 27 wickets (ave.17.77) is the second highest by any bowler in a three-Test series vs New Zealand, next only to Waqar Younis -- 29 (ave.10.86) in 1990-91.

# Ashwin, with 44 wickets at an average of 19.86 in seven Tests, including five five-wicket hauls and two instances of ten wickets or more in a Test match, is the top wicket-taker this year in Tests.

# Ashwin enjoys an outstanding record in Test wins -- his tally being 151 wickets (ave.18.12) in 21 Tests, including 17 five-wicket hauls and five instances of ten wickets or more in a Test match.

# Ashwin's tally of 151 wickets in wins is the third highest for India in Tests next only to the 288 by Anil Kumble and 221 by Harbhajan Singh.

# Both Kumble and Ashwin share a record for most instances (five) of ten wickets or more in a Test match in a winning cause.

# In only five Tests vs New Zealand, Ashwin has taken 45 wickets at 15.91 runs apiece, including six five-wicket hauls and three instances of ten wickets or more in a Test match. His tally of six five-wicket hauls and three instances of ten wickets or more in a Test match are records in Tests involving India and New Zealand.

# Harbhajan Singh (vs Australia, 2000-01) and Ravichandran Ashwin (vs New Zealand (2016-17) are the only two Indian bowlers to produce two instances of ten wickets or more in a Test series.

# Ashwin deservingly received his seventh Man of the Match award in Tests - his second against New Zealand.

# Ashwin got the Player of the Series for the seventh time in Tests, extending his Indian record.  Since his Test debut in November 2011, no other player has received so many Player of the series awards.

# India whitewashed New Zealand for the first time in a Test series -- their fourth instance in Tests -- the first three instances being 4-0 vs Australia in 2012-13; 3-0 vs England in 1992-93 and 3-0 vs Sri Lanka in 1993-94.

# India's deserving victory by 321 runs is their largest in terms of runs over New Zealand -- their second biggest in terms of runs in Tests behind the 337-run win over South Africa at Delhi in 2015-16. India's previous largest win in terms of runs over New Zealand was by 272 runs at Auckland in 1967-68 under Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi's captaincy.

# The superb Indore victory is the tenth in 17 Tests under Virat Kohli's captaincy (two losses and five drawn games) - success % 58.82. Among the Indian captains with at least five Tests, he is the only one to enjoy winning % of fifty or more.

# New Zealand have recorded their seventh whitewash in Tests (minimum three Tests).

# Gautam Gambhir (50) recorded his 22nd fifty in Tests -- his fourth vs New Zealand.  His excellent record vs New Zealand continues in Tests -- his aggregate being 749 runs at an average of 53.50, including two centuries and four fifties, in 9 Tests.

# Cheteshwar Pujara registered his fourth fifty-plus innings in the current rubber -- 62 & 78 at Kanpur; 87 & 4 at Kolkata and 41 & 101 not out at Indore -- a feat recorded by him for the first time, bettering the three fifty-plus innings (a hundred and two fifties) vs Australia in 2012-13.

# Pujara's marvellous unbeaten 101 is his second century vs New Zealand -- his eighth in Tests.

# Pujara is the third number three Indian batsman to post four fifty-plus innings in a series of three Tests. Mohinder Amarnath had recorded two centuries and two fifties while making 367 runs at 91.75 vs Pakistan in 1982-83 and Rahul Dravid had hit four fifties while amassing 306 runs at 61.20 vs New Zealand in 2008-09.

# Virat Kohli's match aggregate of 228 (211 & 17) is the second highest tally by an Indian captain vs New Zealand in a Test match next only to the 232 (217 & 15) by Sachin Tendulkar at Ahmedabad in 1999-00.  His tally is his second highest in a Test match as captain behind the 256 (115 & 141) vs Australia at Adelaide in 2014-15.
