Statistical highlights: India vs South Africa, 1st Test, Day 1

# Jacques Kallis, with his 34th century, has extended his South African record, sharing the third place with Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara and only Sachin Tendulkar (45) and Ricky Ponting (39) have posted more hundreds than Kallis.

# In his last four innings, Kallis has posted two centuries. He had made 108 against England at Cape Town last month.

# Kallis has now registered 16 hundreds away from home and 18 in South Africa.

# Kallis has become the second batsman to post 25 hundreds while batting at number four and only India's Sachin Tendulkar (39) has recorded more hundreds at this batting position.

# In the course of his unbeaten 159, Kallis has completed his 1000 runs for South Africa against India, aggregating 1043 at an average of 65.18 in 12 Tests -- a tally bettered only by Sachin Tendulkar (1202) and Rahul Dravid (1132) in South Africa-India Tests.

# Kallis is also the top run-getter for his country against India in India, amassing 716 at an average of 71.60 including three centuries and two fifties in eight Tests. He has equalled Gary Kirsten's South African record for most hundreds (3) against India.

# Kallis has set another record. His tally of three centuries against India in India is the most by a South African, bettering Gary Kirsten's two hundreds.

# Kallis' innings is also his highest against India, beating the 132 at Ahmedabad in 2007-08.

# Hashim Amla and Kallis put on an unbroken 285 for the third wicket and the partnership is not only the highest for any wicket at VCAS, Jamtha, Nagpur, but also South Africa's highest for any wicket against India, beating the 256 between Kallis and Abraham de Villiers for the fifth wicket at Ahmedabad in 2007-08.

# Hashim Amla has posted his 8th century in Tests -– his second against India. The said knock is his third century away from home.

# Wriddhiman Saha and Subramaniam Badrinath, with their Test debut, have provided the first instance in four years when two players made their debut for India. Munaf Patel and Piyush Chawla had made their Test debut in the 2005-06 Mohali Test against England.
