The World T20 Championships has seen a plethora of records created since its inception in 2007. Rediff.com gives you a glance of all the interesting statistics from the tournament!

Most matches played

Pakistan's Shahid Afridi and Kamran Akmal have played the most World T20 matches since the tournament's inception in 2007.

The next most experienced players in the tournament  are all Sri Lankans, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardena, Lasith Malinga and Kumar Sangakkara all having played 25 matches each.

This is Sangakkara and Jayawardene’s last T20 tournament; both players have announced their retirement from the shortest form of the game.

Most runs scored

Mahela Jayawardene leads this list with the highest number of runs against his name.

He is one of the few batsmen to have scored a century in the T20 format.

Jayawardene scored a ton against Zimbabwe in the 2010 edition of the tournament, and in 25 matches averages over 40.

Chris Gayle of the West Indies (664 runs in 18 matches) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (632 in 25 matches) have the most runs in the tournament after Jayawardene.

Most wickets

Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga has claimed the most wickets in the World T20 Championship. His best bowling figures read 5 for 31.

With 32 wickets, Pakistan’s top spinner Saeed Ajmal comes in next. He has conceded a measly 6.6 runs per over.

Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis is the third in the list with 31 wickets.

Flamboyant West Indies batsman Chris Gayle has struck the most sixes in the history of the tournament.

He was the architect of the Caribbean team’s triumph in the last edition.

Shane Watson and Yuvraj Singh are a distant second from Gayle’s awe-inspiring 43, each having hammered 27 sixes!.

Most catches

South Africa’s AB de Villiers has plucked most catches in the tournament.

Australia’s David Warner is next on the list with 14, followed by Ross Taylor with 13 catches.

Highest individual score

123

Brendon McCullum has scored two T2O international centuries and one of them came against Bangladesh in the 2012 edition of the tournament in Pallekele in Sri Lanka.

He bludgeoned the Bangladeshi bowlers to score 123 runs and become the highest scorer in this format to date.

West Indies’ Chris Gayle (117) and India’s Suresh Raina (101) complete the top three in the list.

Best bowling figures

Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis weaved a web around the Zimbabwean batsmen in Humbantota in the 2012 edition to record the best bowling figures in the tournament so far.

Pakistan pacer Umar Gul (5 for 6) and Sri Lanka quickie Lasith Malinga (5-31) have the next best bowling figures.

Most dismissals by a Wicketkeeper

Pakistan’s Kamran Akmal holds the record for most dismissals. In 26 matches he has eight catches and 16 stumpings.

He is closely followed by Kumar Sangakkara, with 23 dismissals (10 catches and 13 stumped), while Windies 'keeper Dinesh Ramdin is a distant third in the list, with 18 dismissals (16 catches and two stumpings).

Highest total

Sri Lanka had set the impossible target against Kenya in the inaugural edition of the tournament in Johannesburg in 2007.

That same year, Yuraj Singh pelted Stuart Broad for six consecutive sixes in Durban to help India record the second highest total (218 for 4) in the history of the tournament.

Two years later, South Africa's batsmen hammered Scotland’s clueless bowlers to register 211 for 5 and script the third highest total of the tournament at the Oval in 2009.

Highest partnerships

Sri Lanka's veterans Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara joined forces against the West Indies in Bridgetown in 2010 to record 166 runs off 99 balls and rescue the Islanders after a shaky start.

But it was West Indies openers Chris Gayle and Devon Smith who stitched the first world record first-wicket partnership of 145 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2007. 

South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs and Justin Kemp have the third-highest partnership of 120 not out against the West Indies in 2007.
