Interestingly, the next two bowlers are both spinners in the form of leg-spinner Anil Kumble and left-armer Bishan Singh Bedi, who claimed 36 wickets in 10 Tests and 35 wickets in 12 games respectively.

Zaheer Khan, who played a key role in India's series triumph in 2011, is fourth on the list with 31 wicktes from eight games, but was not selected for the ongoing tour of England because of injury.

10 Tests where India flourished in England

July 09, 2014 20:04 IST
India coach Duncan Fletcher (3rd left) waits with his team on the players balcony as rain stops play during the first Npower Test against England at Lord's Cricket Ground

The Indian cricket team has had fine moments in England, like Dilip Vengsarkar’s fighting second innings century in 1982 at Lord’s. Unfortunately, his 157 was in vain as England won by seven wickets. Kapil Dev exhibited his all-round skills, taking eight wickets in the match and scoring 41 and 89.

Then, on June 5, 1986 came India's first victory at Lord’s when Kapil's Devils beat an English side led by David Gower. England scored 294 in the first innings, with Chetan Sharma taking five wickets. Graham Gooch scored a century.

Vengsarkar hit his third consecutive Lord’s century in a reply of 341 with Mohinder Amarnath supporting him with 69.

In the second innings, England succumbed to Kapil and Maninder Singh, setting India a target of 136. At 78-4 there were some nervous moments but Kapil and Ravi Shastri kept their heads to take the team to a historic five-wicket triumph.

And then who can forget the Lord's Test in 1952. Despite suffering an eight-wicket loss, the match is still remembered for Vinoo Mankad's magical innings.

Mankad slammed 184 runs, with the help of 19 fours and a six, in India's second innings total of 378 to enable the team avoid the humiliation of an innings defeat.
