Should Sourav Ganguly replace Ravi Shastri as Team India Director?

Last updated on: May 19, 2015 14:42 IST

Former Indian cricketer Sourav GangulyWith the new Board of Control for Cricket in India bosses meeting on Wednesday, speculation is rife that Team India Director Ravi Shastri will be replaced by Sourav Ganguly.

Will this India XI play Bangladesh?

Ganguly’s proximity to the new BCCI president, Jagmohan Dalmiya, is well-known. The moment he was elected president he suggested that the former India captain take over as the new technical committee chairman.

Even former batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar feels that a man of Ganguly's "capability" should be used by the BCCI in the running of the Indian cricket team provided the 'Prince of Calcutta' can find time from his busy schedule.

Asked if Ganguly is the right candidate to replace Shastri as overall head of the support staff (Team Director/High Performance Manager), Gavaskar told NDTV, 'Depends on the time he (Ganguly) has. He has a lot of commitments.'

Gavaskar also made it clear that if Ganguly is made High Performance Manager or Team Director, then the chief coach's post doesn't hold much significance.

'It all depends on how the BCCI is looking at it. If Sourav becomes High Performance Manager, then he might just want a batting coach, bowling coach and fielding coach of his choice,' said Gavaskar.
