'Flattered' Warne kills off Ashes comeback talk

December 16, 2010 09:04 IST

Australian spin bowling great Shane Warne finally killed off talk of a comeback to Test cricket on the morning of the third Ashes encounter on Thursday saying he had been tempted but is?not fit enough.

Media calls for the recall of the 41-year-old began after Australia crumbled to an innings and 71-run loss to England in the second Ashes Test against England at the Adelaide Oval last week.

Warne retired from Test cricket in triumph after Australia's 5-0 Ashes whitewash in early 2007 but continues to play in the Indian Premier League while pursuing a media career.

Shane Warne"I must say I was very flattered and surprised that a lot of you out there wanted me to make a comeback and play in the series," he wrote in the Herald Sun newspaper.

"Of course I would love to be out there in the thick of it, but if there was to be a comeback I'd need time to get match fit.

"My general fitness is as good as it's ever been -- I have worked hard on that lately -- but toiling away for long spells and backing up the next day takes time, practice, lots of physiotherapy and even more dedication.

"I must admit it did cross my mind, but then I woke up in London, where it was snowing, and realised I was only dreaming.

"So, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there will be no comeback in this Ashes series."

Left-armer Michael Beer was plucked from obscurity for the 12-man third Test squad and would become the 10th spinner Australia have used since Warne's retirement if he gets selected in the final XI.

Warne said he was confident his former club mate would have an impact if he got his chance.

"He is an in-your-face player and...this is what the Australian team needs," he said.

"He could surprise many with his ability to spin the ball... He thinks about his game, has the ability to adapt and is a quick learner.

"I'm really looking forward to watching my old St Kilda team mate play for his country and I'm sure our mates at the Junction Oval will raise a glass or two to toast the new Australian spinner.
