Let Sachin only decide on his retirement: Srikkanth

March 22, 2012 20:11 IST

India's chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth says Sachin Tendulkar, who recently scored his milestone 100th international century, should only decide when he wants to quit international cricket.

Tendulkar completed his 100th hundred when he scored 114 against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup and many feel the veteran batsman should retire, at least from ODIs, now that he doesn't have anything more to achieve.

Also, with India losing consecutive overseas Test series to England and Australia and senior player Rahul Dravid retiring from international cricket earlier this month, there is speculation on Tendulkar's retirement.

However, Srikkanth feels only Tendulkar has the right to decide whether to retire or not.

"Let Sachin only decide about it," Srikkanth said.

Srikkanth was criticised for India's poor show on the tour of England and Australia, but the former skipper exuded confidence that the team will do well in future.

"Cricket is a game where sometime we lose and sometime we win. But seeing it in the right spirit of sports, we should not forget that it is the same team which brought World Cup a year back. But, yes, we did have a lull after that for about six to eight months," he said.

"Having played cricket, I know the game very well. We should always keep in mind that it's a game which has lots of up and downs. I think cricket makes people feel hungry. The hunger for the game and hunger for the runs will always be there in the country," added Srikkanth.

He also praised Virat Kohli, who is in the form of his life.

Asked if Kohli could be captain of the Indian team, Srikkanth replied: "I really can't say; but it's good for the team. I'm sure there will be many more Kohlis in future."
