Rohit, Ankit sizzle for Mumbai in T20 tie

October 24, 2011 18:36 IST

Riding on a cracking half-century by middle-order batsman Rohit Sharma, followed by some splendid slow bowling by Ankit Chavan, Mumbai thrashed Maharashtra by 99 runs in the West Zone T20 match played at SCA stadium, Khandheri, in Rajokt, on Monday.

After being invited to bat first, Mumbai amassed 211 for four and then bundled out Maharashtra for a paltry 112 off 17.5 overs to emerge convincing winners.

Rohit Sharma made 68 off 37 balls with nine fours and a six while Sushant Marathe (49 in 32 balls) and Prashant Naik (48 in 26 balls) came up with useful contributions that helped Mumbai to cross the 200 mark.

For Maharashtra, Kishor Bhikane, Srikant Mundhe and Sangram Atitkar secured a wicket each.

Chasing the formidable target of 212, Maharashtra never were in the game as only four batsmen could reach the double digit.

Harshad Khadiwale struck 32 in 23 balls with four fours and one six while Sangram Atitkar made 33 off 28 balls with two fours and one six.

Ganesh Gaikwad (13) and Akshay Darekar (13) were the other two to reach the double digit.

Left arm orthodox spinner Ankit Chavan was the wrecker-in-chief, claiming four wickets conceding 29 runs while Avishkar Salvi took two wickets giving away 21 runs.

Brief scores: Mumbai 211 for 4 (Rohit Sharma 68, Sushant marathe 49, Prashant Naik 48) beat Maharashtra 112 all out (Harshad Khadiwale 32, Sangram Atitkar 33; Ankit Chavan 4-29, Avishkar Salvi 2-21).
