Half centuries by opening batsman Wasim Jaffer (86 off 105 balls) and Amol Muzumdar (56 not out) helped reigning champions Mumbai take a 18-run first innings lead over Gujarat on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group 'A' cricket match in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Resuming at their overnight score of 210 for eight, the visitors were bowled out for 232 off 97 overs 26 minutes after the start of play with Test discard Ajit Agarkar picking up both the wickets of Bhavik Thakkar (22 off 72 balls) and last man Ashrat Makda (9). Hitesh Majmudar was left stranded on 19.

Jaffer and Vinayak Mane gave the hosts a solid start putting on 99 runs off 32.5 overs before Gujarat bowlers tasted success when they had Mane caught by make shift wicketkeeper Nilesh Modi off paceman Makda for 28 off 105 balls with four fours.

Modi was forced to keep the wickets after Test discard Parthiv Patel hurt his right thumb in Mumbai's 16th over and had to leave the field.

Patel will miss the next two matches as the X-Ray later showed a dislocated thumb.

Jaffer, who was timing the ball well, raced to his 50 with eleven hits to the fence and looked in very good nick before being caught by Kirat Damani off spinner Timil Patel for 86 which also included 16 well struck boundaries.

Vinit Indulkar and Muzumdar, then, added another 52 runs for the third wicket off 19.3 overs before Modi stumped the former off Damani for 34 with the score reading 196.

Left hander Nishit Shetty then joined Muzumdar and the two of them had added 54 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket stand.

Shetty was batting on 26 off 56 balls while Muzumdar was on 56 with four fours and a six in Mumbai's first innings score of 250 for three off 82 overs in 345 minutes when the stumps were drawn for the day.

Makda, Patel and Damani have picked up a wicket each so far while the bowlers who were among the wickets for Mumbai were offie Ramesh Powar (five for 66), pacemen Usman Malvi (three for 26) and Ajit Agarkar (two for 54).
