Number crunching: Ashwin overtakes Broad

India beat South Africa by 124 runs in the third Test in Nagpur,inside three days, to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series on Friday.

652 Runs scored in the match – second lowest in a match in India (where all 40 wickets fell). Only Wankhede Test between India and Australia in 2004-05 saw a lower match aggregate – 605.

264 Runs scored by South Africa in the match – the lowest they have managed while losing 20 wickets since their re-admission in international cricket. The previous lowest was 292 against Australia at Johannesburg in 2001-02

55 Number of wickets taken by Ashwin in Tests in the year 2015 – most by any bowler. He went ahead of England’s Stuart Broad’s tally of 51 wickets. The last Indian bowler to take 50 wickets in a calendar year was Harbhajan Singh (63 wickets in 2008).

24 Number of wickets taken by Ravi Ashwin in the series – most by any bowler in a series between India and South Africa. The previous record was 21 by Dale Steyn in 2010-11

15 Number of away series after which South Africa finally suffered a loss. Their last defeat in an away series came in Sri Lanka in 2006 when they lost 0-2. Since then South Africa had remained undefeated in all away series, winning 10 and drawing remaining five.

12 for 98 – Ravi Ashwin’s match aggregate – best for any bowler in India-South Africa Tests. Allan Donald’s 12 for 139 at Port Elizabeth in 1992-93 was the previous best.

7 This Test provided the seventh instance of not even a single batsman scoring a fifty in a Test where all 40 wickets fell. All other previous instances came in England- Australia Tests. The last such occurrence was at Birmingham in 1981 and before that in 1896 !

5 out of last six Tests on Indian soil have finished in three days. The only one that did not was rain-marred Bangalore Test.

2 Only the second time India beat South Africa in two Tests in a series. The only other instance was in 1996-97 under Sachin Tendulkar.
