Kumble's effort in vain

Anil Kumble's two-wicket haul hardly made a difference as Surrey succumbed to a shocking 37-run defeat against Nottinghamshire in the semi-finals of the Twenty20 Cup at Trent Bridge.

The veteran Indian leg-spinner took two wickets in his four-over spell while conceding 26 runs as Notts scored 176 for six after winning the toss. Kumble contributed eight runs with the bat in his team's unsuccessful chase.

Surrey were all out for 139 in 19.1 overs after Charlie Shreck ripped apart their top order with his incisive seam bowling to stun the favourites.

With this win, Nottinghamshire booked a title clash with Leicestershire.

For the hosts, David Hussey scored a quickfire 42 before being bowled by Kumble, who combined well with Nayan Doshi to put breaks on the Notts' scoring after openers Graeme Swann (32) and Stephen Fleming (31) made 60 in seven overs.

Kumble broke the stand by bowling Fleming but the Notts' middle-order managed to put up a decent 176 for six.

In reply, Surrey were hit by Shreck's fury who took three wickets for 33. Ryan Sidebottom mounted the visitors' misery at the other end with his economical spell conceding just seven runs.

Surrey were looking down the barrel at 59 for six and never managed to recover from the initial jolts with Jon Batty's 58 being the only saving grace for the visitors, who last won the Cup in 2003.
