Sri Lanka called up uncapped opener Shantha Kalavitigoda in a 14-man squad for their rescheduled tour to New Zealand.

Kalavitigoda's selection was a surprise as he was not selected in a preliminary 18-man training pool.

However, the 27-year-old's impressive 83 against England A this week helped him leapfrog other contenders.

His substantial first-class experience -- he averages 32.86 after 100 first-class matches -- will also have counted in his favour in the expected bowler-friendly conditions.

Left-armer Ruchira Perera has also been called up as a replacement for Nuwan Zoysa, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee on Wednesday in Australia.

Perera caught the eye of the selectors after two and a half years on the sidelines with a superb performance in the recent provincial tournament final when he claimed nine for 127.

The recall marks the end of a difficult period of Perera's career after his action was reported as suspected during a tour to England in 2002.

Perera is one of five pace bowlers picked for a late-season visit that may necessitate Sri Lanka fielding three or four seamers in the final XI.

The squad will be lead by Marvan Atapattu and Mahela Jayawardene was been reappointed vice-captain.

Leading spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who will marry this weekend in Chennai, will miss the tour to give his bowling shoulder more time to recover from a second operation in February.

Muralitharan was initially told he could resume bowling in the nets on March 17 and has since been advised to wait until his return from Chennai next week by his Melbourne-based shoulder surgeon.

Sri Lanka will start the two-Test series in Napier on April 4 and then playing the second game in Wellington starting on April 11.

Sri Lanka were then due to have an extended break until a West Indies tour in July but a five-match one-day series has now been arranged immediately after the New Zealand tour.

Sri Lanka are expected to leave for India on April 19. The dates and venues for the series are still to be finalised.

Sri Lanka squad:

Marvan Atapattu (captain), Mahela Jayawardene (vice captain), Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara (wicketkeeper), T M Dilshan, Thilan Samaraweera, Shantha Kalavithigoda, Upul Chandana, Chaminda Vaas, Rangana Herath, Farveez Maharoof, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasitha Malinga, Ruchira Perera
