Rajasthan Royals player Ankeet Chavan’s residence wore a deserted look on Thursday morning. His parents refused to comment on his alleged role in the spot-fixing scandal that hit the cash-rich Indian Premier League on Wednesday.
Chavan and two if his Rajasthan Royals teammates, India pacer S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila, were arrested by the Delhi police in Mumbai on Wednesday night on charges of spot-fixing in the ongoing sixth edition of the IPL.
The trio were suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Thursday pending an inquiry.
The arrest took place immediately after the players returned to the team hotel, after their match against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium. The hosts won by 14 runs.
Ankeet’s family is in a state of shock. When rediff.com visited his house in Mumbai a few mediapersons had gathered outside waiting for his parents’ reaction, but they refused to open the door.
One of his family members said, “It’s not the right time to speak. As of now we would not like to comment on anything.”
It is alleged that the left arm spinner who was in the Rajasthan Royals’ playing eleven for Wednesday's game conceded just two runs in his first over, but was hit for two big sixes by Glenn Maxwell in his next. This over could be the one being investigated for spot-fixing.
Delhi Police sources say that they have enough evidence, as the players have been under the scanner for spot-fixing for quite some time.
The players were booked under sections 420 (cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC.
