Stats: Cook, Strauss have recorded 13 century partnerships

Statistical highlights from the second day's play in the third Test between India and England played at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

# Alastair Cook (182 not out off 339 balls) posted his best knock against India, surpassing the 104 not out at Nagpur in 2005-06.

# Cook's unbeaten knock is the fourth highest for England against India at Edgbaston -- the top three innings being 214 not out by David Lloyd in 1974, 200 not out by David Gower in 1979 and 183 not out by Mike Gatting in 1986.

# Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss have registered 13 century partnerships -- eleven for the first wicket and two for the second wicket. The pair posted their second century stand against India --their first is 118 for the first wicket at Chennai in December 2008.

# The Strauss-Cook pair is the first English opening pair and the fourth in Tests to aggregate 4,000 runs or more -- 4072 at an average of 43.31 in 96 innings. The pair joined three other pairs -- West Indies' Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes (6482 at 47.31 in 148 innings), Australia's Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden (5655 at 51.88 in 113) and Sri Lanka's Marvan Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya (4469 at 40.26 in 118).

# The 11 opening century stands by Cook-Strauss have been exceeded only by Greenidge-Haynes (16), Hobbs-Sutcliffe (15) and Hayden-Langer (14).

# Kevin Pietersen (63 off 78 balls) recorded his fourth fifty against India -- his 25th in Tests.

# Pietersen has averaged 56.21 in Tests against India -- 1068 in 20 innings, including four centuries and four fifties.

# The 186-run opening partnership is England's highest against India at Edgbaston, obliterating the 157 between David Lloyd and Dennis Amiss in 1974.

# The said stand is the third highest for England against India for the first wicket -- the top two being 225 between Atherton and Gooch at Manchester and 204 by the same pair at Lord's -- both in 1990.

# Strauss's knock of 87 is the third highest by an English skipper against India at Edgbaston -- the top two being Mike Gatting's 183 not out in 1986 and Mike Denness' 100 in 1974.

# Strauss's knock is his highest in seven Tests in 2011, surpassing the 60 against Australia at Sydney in January 2011.

# England have recorded 372 in a day's play -- their best performance against India at Edgbaston -- their fifth highest in a day's play at this venue.
