Rohit Sharma completes 1000 ODI runs vs Australia in only 19 innings, the fewest by any batsman.

India stared the five-ODI series against Australia on a losing note, beaten by five-wickets in the first match in Perth on Tuesday.

Captain Steve Smith and George Bailey struck fluent centuries as Australia chased down a steep 310-run target to win with four balls to spare.

Smith was out after posting his highest ODI score of 149 with Australia two runs short of victory.

Earlier, opener Rohit Sharma smashed an unbeaten 171 as India amassed 309 for three after winning the toss and deciding to bat first in sublime batting conditions at the WACA ground.

171* Rohit Sharma’s score. It is the highest by any batsman against Australia in Australia, bettering Viv Richards’s 153* at Melbourne in 1979. It is also the fifth highest individual score by any batsman in Australia. Incidentally, the previous highest score by an Indian batsman in Australia was 141 by Sourav Ganguly vs Pakistan at Adelaide in 2000.

105 Number of sixes hit by Rohit Sharma in ODIs. He became seventh Indian batsman to hit 100 sixes in ODIs.

77.37 Runs scored per wicket in the match (619 runs for the loss of 8 wickets) – second highest in a match in Australia where 600 or more runs were scored. The highest is 91.57 in match between India and Sri Lanka at Hobart BO in 2012.

37 Number of sixes hit by Rohit Sharma in ODIs in Australia – most by any batsman. He went ahead of Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 35 sixes.

19 Number of innings taken by Rohit Sharma to complete 1000 ODI runs vs Australia – fewest by any batsman. Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara shared the previous record, taking 20 innings each.

His sequence: 95 (v Afghanistan), 72 (v Sri Lanka), 65 (v Pakistan), 105 (v India), 56* (v New Zealand)....and 149 (v India). Smith has now equalled Mark Waugh’s record of most consecutive fifty-plus scores in ODIs on Australian soil. Mark Waugh had done so in January 1999.

1 The match provided the first instance in ODI history of both sides forging a double century partnership in the same match. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli added 207 runs for India for the second wicket, while Steven Smith and George Bailey put on 242 runs for Australia for the third wicket.
