Hazare Trophy: Yuvraj powers Punjab, Dhoni fails again

A summary of the day's play in the Vijay Hazare One-day tournament.

Riding on star player Yuvraj Singh’s unbeaten 78, Punjab posted a comfortable six-wicket victory over Rajasthan and registered their fourth victory in five matches to take a step closer to the knock-out stages in the Vijay Hazare One-day tournament, in Hyderabad, on Tuesday.

Manender Singh, playing in only his second List A game, top-scored with 118 in Rajasthan's 270 for 7, but it wasn't enough as Punjab's launch pad was set up by Jiwanjot Singh (66) and Mandeep Singh (60).

That gave a platform for Yuvraj, who hit 10 fours and two towering sixes in his 59-ball knock as Punjab chased down the target with 32 balls to spare.

Barinder Singh Sran, the left-arm pacer, was Punjab's best bowler of the day, finishing with figures of 4 for 60.

Mumbai too good for Services

Mumbai came up with a fine bowling and batting display to register a comfortable six-wicket victory over Services in their Group A match of the

Vijay Hazare One-Day cricket tournament, in Hyderabad, on Tuesday.

After bundling out Services for 151, Mumbai made short work of their chase, racing to their target in 25.2 overs.

Electing to field at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Mumbai’s bowlers made it count as new-ball bowler Shardul Thakur picked four wickets.

Dhawal Kulkarni, Shashank Singh and Iqbal Abdullah also chipped in with two wickets each as Services’ batting folded in 42.1 overs.

Opener Nakul Verma struck a patient 50, while Rajat Paliwal (41) and Saumya Swain (28) also made significant contributions as rest of the Services batsmen failed to manage double figures.

The Aditya Tare-led side then got down to business right away with opener Akhil Herwadkar top-scoring with 46 runs while in-form Shreyas Iyer also contributed a quick fire 35.

Off-spinner Azaruddin Bloch bagged two wickets.

Baroda beat Maharashtra by 8 wickets

Opener Aditya Waghmode and Deepak Jagbir Hooda scored unbeaten fifties to back the efforts of their bowlers as Baroda outplayed Maharashtra by eight wickets in a Group C match in Delhi.

Chasing 177 for victory at the Feroz Shah Kotla, Baroda rode on a 132-run unbeaten third-wicket stand between Waghmode (77 not out) and Hooda (58 not out) to canter home in 39.3 overs.

The Ambati Rayudu-led side lost a couple of wickets early, including star batsman Yusuf Pathan (18), but Waghmode and Hooda mixed the right dose of caution and aggression to drive the team home.

Earlier, electing to field, Baroda reinstated the faith in the team's decision to restrict the Kedar Jadhav-led side to 176 for nine in 50 overs.

In-form left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt bagged four wickets while left-arm medium Rishi Arothe picked two.

Rahul Tripathi top-scored with a gutsy 46 while opener Harshad Khadiwale (36) and Jadhav (25) made useful contributions even as the rest of the batsmen failed to get into double figures.

The two sides are just behind table-toppers Delhi, with Baroda registering three wins and two losses in five appearances, and Maharashtra suffering their first loss in four games.

Kalaria bags four wkts as Gujarat defeat Haryana

Medium-pacer Rush Kalaria took four wickets as Gujarat defeated Haryana by 28 runs in a Group B match in Bangalore.

Chasing a target of 260 after putting Gujarat in to bat on winning the toss, Haryana were bowled out for 231 in 49.5 overs.

Rujul Bhatt was the top-scorer for Gujarat with a 75-ball 55 as the folded in 49.5 overs.

Skipper Parthiv Patel was another notable contributor, scoring 45 off 55 deliveries.

For Gujarat, leg-spinner Amit Mishra picked three wickets, while Ashish Hooda and Harshal Patel grabbed two each.

Haryana's chase went haywire after their top-order failed to convert starts into big innings, the only exception being Rahul Dagar (53) and Poonish Mehta (57).

Apart from Kalaria's 4-37, R P Singh and Jasprit Bumrah also snared two wickets each.

Satish, Sharma power Vidarbha to a 158-run win over Tripura

Ganesh Satish and Jitesh Sharma blasted centuries as Vidarbha trounced Tripura by 158 runs in their Group C match at Palam B Ground in Delhi.

Put in to bat, Vidarbha posted a mammoth 324 for five in their stipulated 50 overs, courtesy an unbeaten 140 off 134 by Satish and a 108-ball 105 by Sharma.

Satish hit 12 boundaries and four sixes, while Sharma's innings was laced with 10 boundaries and a six.

For Tripura, Rana Dutta (2-57) and C K Paul (2-64) were the pick of the bowlers with two wickets each, while MB Murasingh (1-79) snapped a wicket.

Chasing 325 to win, Tripura were never in the hunt as they lost wickets at regular interval with Samrat Singha (32) and Sanjay Majumder (39) being the highest scorer.

Tripura's fight lasted for 47.4 overs as they were dismissed for 166 to hand over a massive victory to Vidarbha in the end.

AA Wakhare (3-29) returned a three-wicket haul for Vidarbha, while R D Thakur (2/41), AK Karnewar (2-12) snapped two wickets and Umesh Yadav (1-10) and R Jangid (1-48) one each.

Railways inflict third successive defeat on J&K

Left-arm spinner Ashish Yadav scalped three batsmen as Railways defended a modest total of 200, eking out a 43-run win over Jammu and Kashmir in Alur, Karnataka.

Skipper Karn Sharma top-scored with a 60-run knock as Railways put on board 200 after being invited to bat at KSCA Cricket Ground.

Arindam Ghosh (36) and Mahesh Rawat (32) were the other two batsmen who out up some resistance against the J&K bowlers.

J&K's left-arm spinner Waseem Raza (4/31) took four wickets in a splendid show after winning the toss.

However, the batsmen could not compliment the good work done by the bowlers and were bundled out for 157 in 43.5 overs.

Wicket-keeper batsman Ian Dev Singh scored a fighting 60-run knock and skipper Parvez Rasool managed 30 but others struggled badly.

It was third successive loss for J&K side as they lost to Haryana and Jharkhand before this contest.

Dhoni fails yet again but Jharkhand beat Karnataka

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's poor run of form in domestic cricket continued as he scored only one but Jharkhand managed to comfortably beat defending champions Karnataka to get a step closer to the quarter-finals.

Batting first, Jharkhand scored 216 for 9 with Ishank Jaggi (50), Saurabh Tiwary (43) and Kumar Deobrat (47) being the chief contributors.

On a day when Dhoni was picked by Pune franchise for a whopping Rs 12.5 crore, his on-field woes continued as he was castled by friendly seam up stuff from Karun Nair as he faced 8 balls.

In reply, Karnataka were all out for 169 with Lokesh Rahul scoring 42. Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem (3/15) was the best bowler on view. Sonu Singh also got three wickets.

Jharkhand now are on top of group B with 16 points while Karnataka are languishing at the fifth place with 8 points from four games.
