Hair withdrawn from county match

Darrell Hair's umpiring career in county cricket was thrown into jeopardy on Tuesday after being withdrawn from a local fixture, as the Oval fiasco took a new turn with the controversial Australian apologising to his supporters for his "ill-advised" e-mail.

Hair was to officiate at Chesterfield in a second eleven match between Derbyshire and Gloucestershire on Wednesday, but was asked to stand down by the England Cricket Board in the aftermath of the ball-tampering row, which resulted in the first ever forfeiture in the history of Test cricket.

The burly Australian has been on the ECB's reserve umpires' list since moving to live in England three years ago and he was hoping to start umpiring at first-class county level next season.

After his war of words with the ICC in the past three days, Hair apologised to his friends and supporters for letting them down by sending an "ill-advised" e-mail offering conditional resignation to the game's governing body.

Hair, while standing his ground on the pay-off issue with the ICC, felt sorry for the fact that he allowed others to question his motives.

"I wish to apologise to all my family, friends and supporters, because I somehow feel that I may have let them down, simply by sending an ill-advised but entirely confidential e-mail," Hair was quoted as saying by Cricinfo.

"That has given other people the opportunity to question my motives," he added.

Hair said he was grateful to his supporters for standing by him during the controversy.

"I firstly want to thank my friends and family for their support. In addition, I want to thank so many supporters from around the world for their support in huge numbers.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has asked the ICC to probe Hair's conduct at the Oval Test before holding the hearing of skipper Inzamam-ul Haq next month.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan, in a letter to the world governing body, has demanded an inquiry into Hair's conduct of accusing Pakistan of ball tampering and his decision to award the Test to England.

Shaharyar wants the inquiry to be launched before the ICC takes a decision on charges of ball tampering.

"The decision by the ICC to cancel the Executive Board meeting in Dubai was taken after a consensus was reached among the members," Shaharyar was quoted as saying by The News.

He said Pakistan had no objection with the cancellation as long as the ICC agreed to open an inquiry against Hair for his role in the Oval Test.

PCB also wants to make sure that Hair is not allowed to stand in any match involving Pakistan in the future, the paper said.
