England have included two newcomers in a 16-man one-day international squad to play Pakistan including 20-year-old fast bowler Stuart Broad, the son of former test batsman Chris.
The squad announced on Wednesday also includes another debutant, 25-year-old all-rounder Michael Yardy, and 35-year-old paceman Darren Gough, who returns after more than a year to the one-day side.
"Stuart, along with Darren Gough and Jon Lewis, give the captain and coach options when opening the bowling, something that proved to be a problem in the series against Sri Lanka," said selectors' chairman David Graveney in a statement.
Chris Broad was an England opening batsman who played 25 tests and 34 one-day internationals between 1984 and 1989. He is also an ICC match referee.
England's one-day squad were whitewashed 5-0 by Sri Lanka earlier in the year, ringing alarm bells with the World Cup due to start in March next year in the Caribbean.
Gough, who has 157 one-day internationals behind him, is a risk as he has been struggling with a shin injury.
"On reflection of the NatWest Series defeat to Sri Lanka earlier in the summer, the selectors felt that we needed some experience in the line-up for (captain) Andrew Strauss and (coach) Duncan Fletcher," Graveney continued.
"We are aware that in recent weeks Darren has been suffering from injury to his shins but we are in constant consultation with the Essex and England medical staff and therefore confident that he will be fully recovered by the first match next Monday."
Gough said: "I'm delighted to get another opportunity with England. I've worked hard all year and this call-up is my reward."
The series had been in jeopardy after some Pakistan players suggested the team could pull out over the ball-tampering row which ended in the tourists' forfeiture of the fourth and final test at the Oval on Sunday.
A hearing into the affair has been postponed beyond Friday as scheduled and the Pakistan Cricket Board said on Wednesday it was confident the one-day series would go ahead.
The teams meet for the first time on Monday in a Twenty-20 match -- 20 overs per team per innings -- in Bristol.
The first of five one-day internationals (60 overs) is in Cardiff on Wednesday.
