Sourav Ganguly's sparkling 72 went in vain as Bengal suffered a 47-run defeat against Mumbai in the three-day Moin-Ud-Dowla Gold Cup cricket match in Hyderabad on Friday.

Chasing a victory target of 229 on the final day, Bengal were in the game till Ganguly was at the crease, but once the former India skipper was dismissed after an 86-ball knock, it was soon all over for them.

Ganguly, seeking a comeback to the national squad, slammed three huge sixes and put on 82 runs for the fourth wicket with Manoj Tiwari (37).

The exit of Tiwari and Ganguly opened the floodgates and the Mumbai bowlers polished off the Bengal tail to bowl out Bengal for 181.

Mumbai, who had taken a first innings lead of 95 runs, scored 133 for nine in the stipulated 40 overs in the second innings.

Brief scores: Mumbai 286 for 7 and 133 for 9 beat Bengal 199 for 9 and 181 (Manoj Tiwari 37, Sourav Ganguly 72).
