Fast bowler Doug Bollinger claimed his Test career-best figures of 5 for 28 to have New Zealand on the mat on Day 3 of the first Test.
Bollinger lead the Australian bowling as New Zealand were skittled out for a paltry 157 in reply to Australia's first innings total of 459 for five declared.
New Zealand were made to follow on and reached 187 for five when bad light stopped play.
Bollinger added another two wickets to add to his tally to end the day with with match figures of seven for 58.
New Zealand still trail by 115 runs to avoid an inning defeat with Daniel Vettori (18) and Brendon McCullum (4) at the crease and hoping to avert the inevitable.
New Zealand began the day on 108 for four but none of the batsman could anchor the innings.
Overnight on 42, Vettori was the first to go in the morning falling to Ryan Harris in the first over the day. He added just four runs to his overnight score.
McCullum then made only 24 before being caught by Harris off the bowling of Bollinger.
After the fall of McCullum no one could really lift the innings as Bollinger ripped through the Kiwi batting line-up before they were all out for 157.
It was the same story in the second innings as the New Zealanders failed to learn from the failings of their first innings.
Bollinger continued from where he left off and scalped two quick wickets in New Zealand's second essay.
He first had BJ Watling trapped leg before wicket before Watling and Tim McIntosh put on 70 for the first wicket.
But Bollinger struck again to leave them at 78 for two when he got Peter Ingram (one) to edge behind to Brad Haddin.
McIntosh (83) and Ross Taylor steered the side to 87 for two by tea but in the final session Taylor (25) was out leg before by Hauritz and the right-hander was given out after Australia called for a review.
McIntosh toiled towards his fourth Test fifty before being foxed by Hauritz.
