Piyush Chawla and Mohnish Parmar claimed five wickets between themselves as India 'A' fought back and restricted Australia 'A' to 113 for 8 in their first innings on the second day of the three-day game, at the M Chinnaswamy stadium, in Bangalore on Thursday.

Parmar took three wickets for 37 and Chawla 2 for 36 to put the home team in a strong position after it was bowled out for 284 in 89.4 overs in the first innings.

Australia 'A' trail by 171 runs with two wickets in hand and a day remaining.

Resuming at the overnight score of 180 for four, after a delayed start due to wet outfield, India added another 104 runs before being bowled out. Mohammad Kaif top-scored with 94.

Kaif hit 15 fours and a six in his 204-ball knock before being caught by Bollinger off Marcus North. He was involved in a 95-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Virat Kohli, who fell for 49 (4x4; 1x6).

Then followed a valuable knock from Chawla, who made an enterprising 66 in 85 balls, inclusive of ten fours and a six.

Doug Bollinger was the pick of the Australia 'A' bowlers, grabbing four wickets for 59, while Bryce McGain returned with three wickets for 51.

In reply, Australia started on a shaky note and were soon three wickets down for 45 runs. D S Kulkarni, in his first class debut, bowled opener Phillip Huges for one while captain Simon Katich (22) was trapped lbw by Parmar.

Marcus North held on end for some time before being bowled by Chawla for 41. At stumps, George Bailey was batting on 37.
